What is IvyPoint?

IvyPoint is a Portland, Maine-based boutique college admissions firm specializing in elite college applications advising and essay writing. It is solely owned and operated by Laurens F. Colson, a best-selling author and graduate from the Yale Class of 2016, having earned a degree in philosophy and religious studies with a focus on Early Modern German intellectual history from Kant to the end of the Weimar Republic.

Drawing on a decade of experience as a leader in high powered college admissions, Laurens helps local young people achieve significant wins on their college admissions journey: he helps them find and advocate for what they love, and create a compelling narrative for leading academic institutions. Fundamentally, IvyPoint exists to bring best-in-class college admissions guidance home to Portland, providing local, accountable advice that delivers massive ROI through scholarships, improved career outcomes, student well-being, and a better seat at the table with leading thinkers and innovators.

Why Work with IvyPoint?

Laurens is a deeply compassionate and intensely capable advisor, with many years of experience focused specifically on elite college apps, a demographic which is currently underserved in Cumberland County. Other similarly comprehensive firms based out of New York or Boston offer all-remote advising with no local accountability: Laurens brings the most competitive local suite of offerings to Mainers, with a unique, student-centered approach that is warm, authentic, and inspiring to his students and their parents.

My son works with Laurens and his advice has been a game changer. Before we signed up, I was super-concerned that my son would find it hard to stay on track with writing essays and deciding on his application strategy.

It's been magical to see my son work closely with Laurens. This has meant that — contrary to my fears — my son has been well ahead of schedule in completing his college applications.

This has reduced our stress as parents; we now just trust that he'll work with Laurens to figure out which new college to apply to, how to position himself to that college, and what needs to happen to create a compelling application.

As I write this, our son has already gotten into one college he loves (with a scholarship + Honors college) and he's consistently received feedback from his school counselors that his essays and applications are top notch. This would not have been possible without Laurens.

My process and experience with Laurens has been amazing, and I believe other students would second my statements. Huge thanks!
